Innovative Actions and Good Practices for the Circular Economy and Sustainable Development in the Agri-Food Sector of the Region of Central Macedonia – 3rd Meeting of the Regional Stakeholders’ Group of the “iCEAR” Project
Innovative actions and good practices linking the circular economy with agricultural production, the sustainable use of natural resources, the bioeconomy and the development of new sustainable value chains were presented and discussed during the 3rd meeting of the Regional Stakeholders’ Group of the European project iCEAR. The meeting was organised in Thessaloniki by the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia (RDFCM), as a project partner, with the support of the Region of Central Macedonia, acting as an Associated Policy Authority.
The iCEAR project (Integrated Circular Economy Action Plans for Rural Areas) is co-funded by the Interreg Europe Programme 2021–2027 and aims to unlock the potential of the circular economy in rural areas, contributing to the creation of quality jobs, environmental protection and improved quality of life. At the same time, the project seeks to further enhance existing policy instruments and develop proposals and recommendations for integrated circular economy action plans in rural areas.
The 3rd meeting of the Regional Stakeholders’ Group (RSG) of the European project iCEAR brought together representatives of the Region of Central Macedonia and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia (RDFCM), the Directorates of Rural Economy and Veterinary Services of the Regional Units of Pella, Pieria and Kilkis, the Ministry of the Interior, the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DEMETER (ELGO-DIMITRA), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the American Farm School, the Regional Solid Waste Management Agency of Central Macedonia (FODSA CM), the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), the Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies, as well as representatives of businesses and organisations active in the fields of the circular economy, agri-food and sustainable development.
Participants were welcomed by Chrysanthi Kisskini, Director of the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, followed by a presentation of the European project iCEAR and its activities by Kyriaki Kissa, Head of the Department of Scientific and Technical Support and Programme Implementation of RDFCM.
The meeting focused on the presentation and discussion of innovative initiatives and good practices promoting the circular economy and sustainable development in the agri-food sector. More specifically, the initiatives “CAPaware”, “AgroVerse”, “RICECUBE” and “BioSynergy” were presented, highlighting the engagement of the agri-food community, the use of emerging technologies, the circular management of agricultural residues and the development of innovative products. In addition, examples of sustainable management practices implemented by the food companies KOLIOS and EURIMAC (MAKVEL) were showcased, demonstrating the potential for integrating sustainable practices into industrial production processes.
Furthermore, a thematic workshop was held as part of the meeting, focusing on the assessment of good practices with potential for implementation in the rural areas of the Region of Central Macedonia. The workshop provided a valuable platform for constructive dialogue and the exchange of views among participants regarding opportunities to adopt and adapt innovative circular economy approaches at regional level.
“The 3rd meeting of the Regional Stakeholders’ Group of the iCEAR project highlighted, once again, the importance of cooperation between public authorities, research and innovation organisations, and businesses, with the shared objective of promoting the circular economy and shaping sustainable development prospects in rural areas.
Through their participation in the iCEAR project, the Region of Central Macedonia and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia (RDFCM) continue to support cooperation and knowledge transfer among relevant stakeholders, making a significant contribution to the promotion of innovative and sustainable approaches to rural development in Central Macedonia,” the meeting organisers emphasised.
