Η πιλοτική δράση «Urban Sandbox for circular solutions: Testing a design-enabled fast-track model for policy instrument improvement» αφορά στη μεταφορά και την προσαρμογή της καλής πρακτικής «Urban Sandbox Valencia» στην Κεντρική Μακεδονία, με στόχο τη δημιουργία και δοκιμή ενός περιφερειακού μηχανισμού που θα διευκολύνει την εφαρμογή καινοτόμων λύσεων κυκλικότητας σε πραγματικές συνθήκες.

EN:
Fifth Meeting of the DeCo Regional Stakeholders’ Group Focuses on the “Urban Sandbox” Pilot Action in Central Macedonia
The fifth meeting of the Regional Stakeholders’ Group (RSG) of the DeCo project, dedicated to the “Urban Sandbox” pilot action in Central Macedonia, was co-organised in Thessaloniki by the International Hellenic University (IHU) and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, with the support of the Region of Central Macedonia in its role as a Policy-Making Authority.
The DeCo project (Design Collaboration for Sustainable Business) is co-funded by the Interreg Europe 2021–2027 programme. It aims to contribute to the achievement of the European Union’s environmental emission reduction targets and support the European Commission’s proposal to make sustainable products the norm across the EU, promote circular business models and empower consumers to participate in the green transition.
The fifth meeting of the DeCo Regional Stakeholders’ Group (RSG) was hosted at the premises of the Region of Central Macedonia and brought together representatives from public administration, academia and research, as well as the commercial, industrial and business sectors.
The meeting focused on the forthcoming “Urban Sandbox” pilot action, which will be designed and implemented in Central Macedonia by the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, in collaboration with the International Hellenic University.
The pilot action, entitled “Urban Sandbox for Circular Solutions: Testing a Design-Enabled Fast-Track Model for Policy Instrument Improvement,” aims to transfer and adapt the good practice of “Urban Sandbox Valencia” to Central Macedonia. Its objective is to develop and test a regional mechanism that facilitates the implementation of innovative circular solutions under real-world conditions.
The initiative builds on the approved good practice “Urban Sandbox Valencia”, which was highlighted and presented during the fourth interregional meeting of the DeCo project. Launched by the Municipality of Valencia in Spain, the Urban Sandbox service provides an organised framework connecting innovation stakeholders with available spaces and infrastructure, enabling them to test new solutions for the circular management of natural resources through simplified administrative procedures.
Drawing inspiration from the “Urban Sandbox Valencia” initiative, the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia and the International Hellenic University (IHU) are working to adopt and adapt this approach to the specific needs and characteristics of the Central Macedonia region.
Through this service, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), start-ups, social enterprises, academic and research institutions, designers, partnerships and public-sector organisations will be able to submit proposals for pilot-testing circular solutions in real-world settings. The initiative will enable innovative circular solutions to be tested under actual operating conditions before wider implementation, allowing for continuous evaluation and improvement prior to their broader application across the region.
During the meeting, the organisers held focused discussions and exchanged views with representatives of the DeCo Regional Stakeholders’ Group on the design and implementation of the proposed pilot action. The meeting also provided an opportunity to present the project’s progress to date, share key lessons learned and showcase other successful examples of circularity and sustainable business practices.
Furthermore, the meeting featured an extensive presentation and discussion of the current European Union policy and regulatory framework, including ESG principles (Environmental, Social and Governance), the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and the importance of data and location intelligence—technologies that transform geographic and spatial data into actionable insights to support business decision-making.
It is worth noting that the fifth meeting of the DeCo Regional Stakeholders’ Group formed part of Interreg Cooperation Day 2026, marking the initiative’s 15th anniversary under the theme “Stronger Together”. The meeting was approved as an official Interreg Cooperation Day event, highlighting the importance of interregional cooperation, knowledge exchange and collaboration among regional authorities, academic institutions, businesses and other stakeholders.
With 15 years of experience, Interreg Cooperation Day has become an established initiative that highlights the value of European cooperation by encouraging networking, the exchange of knowledge and experience, and the development of joint initiatives among regions and organisations across Europe.
Through the presentation of the DeCo pilot action and collaboration among partners from different European regions, the meeting demonstrated how interregional cooperation can facilitate the transfer and adaptation of good practices and support the development of practical solutions tailored to the specific needs of each region.
The next meeting of the DeCo Regional Stakeholders’ Group is scheduled for the sixth semester of the project’s implementation. It will feature new good practices in sustainable business that can be applied not only in the Region of Central Macedonia but also in the other partner regions participating in the project consortium.
