Region of Central Macedonia and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia Participate in the Sixth UrbCitizenPower Urban Living Lab in Košice, Slovakia

The Region of Central Macedonia and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia participated in another important interregional meeting and workshop held as part of the implementation of the European project UrbCitizenPower.

The UrbCitizenPower project (Empower Citizens for Agency as a Driver for Change in Cities) is co-funded by the INTERREG EUROPE 2021–2027 Programme and aims to empower citizens to take action themselves on current and important social issues. The project has a duration of 48 months, running until 31 March 2028, and brings together eight partners from seven European countries: Germany, Finland, Slovakia, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark. The Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia is one of the project partners, while the Region of Central Macedonia participates as an Associated Policy Authority.

The representatives of the Region of Central Macedonia and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia actively participated in the sixth meeting and workshop (Urban Living Lab) of the UrbCitizenPower project partners, which took place a few days ago in Košice, Slovakia. The meeting provided valuable opportunities to explore contemporary urban strategic planning and initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ everyday lives in the Slovak city, while also strengthening cooperation with the other project partners on issues relating to urban development and citizen participation in decision-making.

The three-day programme, dedicated to the exchange of expertise and good practices, actively involved representatives of the Region of Central Macedonia and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia. It focused on the green and blue development strategy of the Košice area, as well as on initiatives highlighting the importance of participatory planning for the development of the urban environment and the organisation of cultural events.

On the first day of the meeting, the Deputy Mayor of Košice welcomed the participants, underlining the importance of the UrbCitizenPower project and interregional cooperation. The municipality’s strategic plan was presented, with particular emphasis on the city’s spatial development and the use and upgrading of public spaces. This was followed by site visits to various locations across the city, where participants were informed about the challenges and interventions associated with improving the urban environment.

The second day was devoted to visits by the UrbCitizenPower delegation to facilities and venues hosting cultural and social activities. A series of visits to facilities serving young people, older people and persons with disabilities highlighted the importance of citizen participation in shaping a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable city. A participatory workshop on urban planning and the further integration of green spaces into the urban fabric followed.

The third and final day of the meeting focused on the progress of the UrbCitizenPower project. Participants discussed the outcomes and conclusions of the three-day meeting and planned future activities and the next steps in the project’s implementation.

In the next phase, the Region of Central Macedonia, as an Associated Policy Authority, the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, as a project partner, and the other members of the Regional Stakeholder Group (RSG) will analyse the conclusions and outcomes of both this meeting and the UrbCitizenPower project as a whole. The analysis of the data collected to date, combined with the good practices identified through the project’s activities, can make a significant contribution to the implementation of the Central Macedonia Regional Programme 2021–2027.
